Akhtala

Akhtala city is situated in Lori region of Armenia, on the foot of Lalvar, on the left bank of the Debed. In the Middle Ages the city was called Pghndzahank (Copper Mine).

Today, Akhtala Monastery is not very popular among tourists because it is far from Yerevan(180 km). Most visitors are passing by on their way between Armenia and Georgia (or vice versa). Nevertheless, the monastery is worth a visit for the architecture of the church and fortress and, especially, the frescoes.

Being situated in the valley of Debed river at a height of 740 meters above sea level, Akhtala has a subtropical climate with cool and dry summers and mild winters. Annual precipitation reaches up to 600 mm.
